Inflight WiFI: How It Works And Is It Worth Paying What You Are!

Inflight WiFi is one of those privileged services which has been delivering lesser than it claims it is. Today, connectivity is much more important than a bad flight or a meal (at least you get to tweet about them). But how can can you afford for it? Today in this article we look into how Inflight WiFi works and if its worth paying some $50 for it.

Inflight Wifi

How Inflight WiFI Works:

To understand if this service is overpriced we investigate the technical details of Inflight WiFi services. The key problem with the architecture of this system is, there are only two possible methods through which Inflight WiFI can be set up and both these methods have a chunk of downsides.

In one of these methods the primary problem is the connectivity with ground stations. To understand this methodology better let’s look at how GoGo (US Inflight WiFi Provider) tackles the issue at hand. GoGo has set up a multitude of 3G ground stations all across US and planes passing over these towers communicate with these towers. The downside in these sequence of events is the limited bandwidth. If you have read anywhere on the Internet don’t get disguised by the 3.1 Mbps you see, it isn’t per customer its for the entire plane. For those who are weak in this concept with 3.1Mbps bandwidth across the entire plane, you could give away watching videos or even songs! If it were a not-so-busy day for the airplane, you could browse without your connection breaking down due to excess traffic.

But this isn’t even the entire deal. There are always chances of interruption and signal crossover delays between towers; and not to forget what happens when the plane flies over oceans. That’s something you can’t let go unnoticed.

Just like they say, if there’s a problem there will be a solution; this above mentioned problem gave route to the development of the second architecture i.e by bringing satellites into the act. Most of these satellites operate in the legacy L-band which is both slow and expensive. The others are based on the Ku-band which are offer better performance and a bit economical. Though comparatively expensive these satellite services offer uninterrupted access even in the middle of the ocean. FlyNet Systems of Lufthansa advertise speeds of 50Mbps which is a better alternative, even if you don’t get speeds as advertised.

With time, many startups and enterprises have taken this model into consideration and are working towards building systems with better throughputs. Only then can we see a fall in the access charges. So to conclude it paying $50 is out of question its all about waiting for the future to bring in better services at more affordable prices.

This is the IBM Watson – An IBM Supercomputer

IBM Watson is the supercomputer of the International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation, named after the company’s founder Thomas J. Watson. This supercomputer is built with the ability to answer questions – like in a ‘question answering’ machine. The fact that answering a question is more complicated (especially for computers) than pointing to a set of relevant answers, like a search engine does, was definitely the biggest challenge; IBM only came out more successful and it could defeat the best human brains of the television show – jeopardy!

Watch how IBM Watson took the game away from the two highest ranked jeopardy players here.

IBM Watson – A Deeper Investigation

Watson is that supercomputer in which, artificial intelligence teams up with much-sophisticated analytical software which helps its answer questions. One significant reason why it’s able to show such abilities is because the IBM Watson uses natural language processing (NLP), machine learning and automated reasoning to answer questions which a general desktop computer doesn’t. Here’s a look at the hardware aspects that make these possible:

  • Enterprise Linux Server 11
  • A total of 2880 processor cores.
  • 15 Terabytes of RAM.
  • IBM’s DeepQA software.
  • Size: Covers a space that can accommodate 10 refrigerators. [Source: Whatis.com]

In all means this configuration is by far the most advanced available, and hats-off to the entire IBM research team for using all of it to empower the IBM Watson Supercomputer.

Watson’s Strengths and Results:

This supercomputer which can think similar to a human being has the following strengths:

Watson can understand, analyze and answer even those questions which are posed in the usual human languages (natural languages) not just with speed and accuracy but also with a degree of confidence.

Watson doesn’t simply answer questions based on keyboards, instead generates hypothesis based on evidence.

Watson is not the end! According to us the best thing about Watson is that it can be taught. It learns with user interactions and keeps itself abreast of what’s going on.

Though it initially occupied an entire master sized bedroom, it’s shrinking more and more and is now 90% smaller than that featured in the “Jeopardy!” television show.

Since its launch, Watson has helped developed over 6000 apps of great value.

Anyways, the biggest achievement of this IBM supercomputer is that it could defeat two of the best “Jeopardy!” Players in 2011, and has always kept improving since then.

A Review On The Apple and IBM Partnership And What It Means To Us

Though it has been some time from when these two tech giants joined hands, we (OnlineCmag) now choose to review the entire scenario. No wonder, Apple + IBM = Groundbreaking Potential; the expertise of IBM in the enterprise level was expected to blend with the consumer and design specific products of Apple. And it’s going pretty well as of now; this collaboration demanded the best minds of IBM and Apple to work together in providing particularly enterprise-centric apps (apart from many other motives) thus helping each other in providing the best services to their clients.

apple and ibm partnership

What’s expected out of this partnership?

Firstly, in the recent years, there’s no denying the fact that Apple had to face severe competition from Android in the mobile space. Ultimately, there were all eyes over Apple about how it can handle the situation. And miraculously it did quite well. It got together with one of it’s foes of all time – IBM. This news back then might have meant nothing to some but certainly raised a lot of eyebrows in sheer astonishment.

This alliance now means that Apple can set foot into the enterprise space, an area which it couldn’t afford to enter back then. One of the pros in this flow of events is that now Apple can consolidate its position in the technology market for a very long time. For IBM too, this alliance is expected to yield the best results. With the help of Apple’s developers it is in plans to combine mobility with big data and cloud.  Thereby, it could mobilize a big number of companies to take up its services.

The negative impact, however, is already on Microsoft (undoubtedly). Microsoft somehow failed completely in establishing its mobile platform’s presence in consumer and enterprise markets. And any company taking the side of Apple and IBM, will only hurt Microsoft. Though there would be significant blows to Android in time to come, Microsoft could suffer the biggest revenue drops and probably fade off completely from the enterprise market, who knows!

What’s happened so far?

After the collaboration was announced last summer, the first fruits of the Apple and IBM partnership appeared last December with IBM issuing a press release of 10 new apps. Under the IBM’s MobileFirst, apps are being developed for Apple products which are designed to benefit fields including banking, travel, retail, Insurance, Energy and Utilities, Telco, Law Enforcements along with other field services. While most of them are still under development, and with both the companies heading towards releasing a 100 apps by the end of 2015, here are those 10 apps that came out already:

  1. Advice & Grow

Under Banking and Financial Markets initiative, the bankers can now directly connect with clients easily using the Advise & Grow app. This means the bankers have complete visibility into relevant account information on the spot, Plus, all this is completely secure.

  1. Case Advice

The Case Advice app designed for iPad, has the ability to transform the entire structure of how social cases are handled. This app provides the edge to government workers in accessing real-time analytics. These include the historical records, assessment data, and other industry guidelines and all of them in their iOS. Also this Case Advice app has the potential to replace all traditional paper work, thus, making processes faster and simpler.

  1. Expert Tech

Expert tech app is a boon for the on-field service technicians. They can plan and reach their destinations faster than ever using their iPads. Along with these location services for route based optimization, technicians can now directly get real time support from their experienced colleagues using FaceTime. Plus, they can view or show customers tech specs, diagnostics, and video tutorials; improving customer satisfaction and productivity.

  1. Incident Aware

The Incident Aware app helps police officials in dealing with critical situations more comfortably than ever. With this app, police officials can easily know of each other’s location and have a bird’s eye view of the incident location. With real time access to maps and video feeds, this app gives police officials the additional support in safeguarding and preventing crimes.

  1. Passenger+

Passenger+ is an innovative app that can make travelling less cumbersome for passengers. This app provides the flight attendants the ultimate power to provide top notch services to all its passengers, right from re-booking to baggage information on the go.

  1. Pick & Pack

This Pick & Pack app is about providing the Retail stores and shoppers a win-win situation. The retail stores can easily and effectively streamline order fulfillment, all using their iPhones. This app combines the iBeacon technology and back-end inventories providing best services to retail stores and shoppers.

  1. Plan Flight

For long, one of the major expenses of all airlines has been ‘fuel’. While there is no alternative, the best thing would be its optimal utilization. The Plan Flight app is just about that. It helps pilots make quick fuel estimates before take offs and even while flying without any calculations or calls to air traffic control. Hence pilots will now be well informed and can make better decisions concerning fuel wastage.

The other 3 apps include Retention (Insurance), Sales Assist (Retail) and Trusted Advice (Banking and Financial Markets). Learn a lot more about these apps and a lot more here.

Features of Windows 8 that couldn’t make it to Windows 10

Like it or not, Windows 8 was filled with bold and creative ideas which didn’t get along as expected in taking Microsoft a giant leap forward. But now, almost three years after that grand failure, Microsoft is ready with yet another creative and hopefully better Windows 10. Soon to be released Windows 10 features some of the best features of the earlier Windows versions and fortunately or unfortunately, all those features of Windows 8 that couldn’t make it to Windows 10 are discussed here.

  1. The Start Screen

Features of Windows 8 that couldn’t make it to Windows 10

If there was something Windows 8 haters could pick out without thinking, is the Windows 8 start screen. This brightly colored and smooth start screen was a replacement to the start button and start menu of the earlier versions.

Microsoft soon tried correcting things and managed to bring back the start button in its Windows 8.1. However, the start screen is officially gone. Now with a click on the start button, a start menu appears which can be expanded to full screen and thank god, it’s optional.

  1. The Charms Bar

Features of Windows 8 that couldn’t make it to Windows 10

The Charms Bar, just like most of the other Windows 8 features didn’t make a lot of sense. Way back in 2011 the charms bar is the first feature of Windows 8 that was shown off.

It was difficult to master and hence was unloved. Windows 10 carried no such unwarranted gifts and swipe from the right only triggered the new Action Center.

  1. Corner Navigation

Features of Windows 8 that couldn’t make it to Windows 10

In Windows 8 though the start button was absent the desktop carried with it the taskbar. On the left corner of this task, appeared the start screen option which was sort of replacement to the start button. Similarly, all corners had something in them supporting navigation.

But again, in plain English it was of no use. Plus, the frustration it brought about in users while getting accidently triggered was in no means good. Atleast Windows 8 offered better control over the corner navigation. Windows 10 is completely clean of any such nuisance.

  1. Full Screen Apps

Features of Windows 8 that couldn’t make it to Windows 10

In Windows 8, the so-called Metro apps ran full screen or got attached to one edge or the other. These apps featured top and bottom menus which were completely hidden. The most annoying part is, most users had to spend a lot of time before actually understanding how to close such apps.

Windows 10 carries no such blunders, atleast. The Windows 10 apps are given the brand name modern apps, and open in their own windows. The final point is, these so-called modern apps are far better than the metro apps and desktop users will find the difference much better.

  1. A Lot More …..

Thankfully, Windows 10 appears to be way better than the Windows 8/8.1’s incompetence. There’s a lot more to add into this list and we believe it’s time you told us what. Do write to us and share what features of Windows 8 you feel couldn’t make it to Windows 10. If there’s any other issues you have noticed in Windows 10 let us know and help share the word. Thank You!

You Could Lose Your Warranty By Installing Linux On Your Computer

A custom in the world of smartphones now reaches computers; limits the possibilities of users. By installing Linux on your computer, you could lose your warranty in the store – That’s what it is.

Do not be alarmed, it’s not that manufacturers have begun to include guarantees installing Linux as a condition that overrides it. It has actually been a big retail chain in the UK,Currys PC World, which is refusing to guarantee some users who bring their computers to the store because they have a hardware failure. For now, we need not worry in India, because this is not going to affect us immediately, but the truth is that, yes, it could be crucial for the future, as in the field of smart phones, for example, Rooting your smartphone, or changing the ROM, firmware, involves the loss of warranty by the manufacturer. If this happens in the case of computers, install Linux , or even install another version of Windows, and you could end up losing the guarantee. Already large number of British groups and other large retailers begin to apply the same conditions in warranty to computers.

Does it make sense?

However, we should ask ourselves whether it really makes any sense. The warranty conditions of many companies in the case of smartphones even comply with European law guarantees, but in case of computers, it would be talking about something even more extreme. Installing an alternative operating system on a computer is almost like installing a program or game, and no warranty is lost by the later. Limiting that is like limiting the usage of cars on roads; say only allow them to be used in the city.

On the other hand, the issue of guarantees is carried too far. The guarantees cover alleged factory failures that the product may have. The biggest problem comes with the difficulty of determining what is a factory fault or what is a fault generated by the user. Linux installation is criticized because it gives more possibilities to the user, including carrying the processor to a level that can be prejudicial for it, but the fact is installing Linux does not mean it will actually harm the computer. Indeed, the vast majority of users do not want to spoil their computer, and make no mistake. A computer won’t get spoiled simply on installing Linux, and that’s the message we want to broadcast out loud.

If you need to put ads in the components of computers to serve as informers of misuse, it is done, but what does not make sense is to demonize the use of Linux , and that neither users nor manufacturers and outlets can defend. Especially considering that, as we have said, among those who use the warranty on their computer by an incident, most suffer factory problems.

The Artificial Intelligent Personal Assistants [Future Tech]

The Artificial Intelligent Personal Assistants [Future Tech]

For a long time, there have been a lot of predictions made by science fiction authors and movie makers on how widespread Artificial Intelligence could cause severe catastrophic issues. But, so far everything’s good and instead of sending any negative signs, somehow they have become an integral part of our daily lives. Thanks to the Intelligent Personal Assistants in our smart phones, we can carry their services with us everywhere. Here in this article we take you through the science behind these Intelligent Personal Assistants and a whole lot more.

What is an Intelligent Personal Assistant (IPA)?

An Intelligent Personal Assistant is a AI-based software agent that can perform tasks completely based on the user input. The special charm of this technology is that it is built with the ability to access online resources in processing user commands. These online resources can be as simple as the weather conditions, news, retail prices etc. There are a lot of these IPAs in the market including the IBM’s Watson, Samsung’s S Voice, Apple‘s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana, Google Now and so on.

The additional ground breaking feature in these Intelligent Personal Assistants is that they don’t completely relay on user’s input. Some activities like management of tasks, updating information without user’s permission are all handled effectively by an IPA.

Actually speaking, these Intelligent Personal Assistants in real time deliver only a very small fraction of what they are build to do. The development of an IPA solely focuses on providing a user interactive system which can actually converse with people. The fact that these solutions can understand our languages and are active to learn more, and get better with time are all the plus points of this technology.

An IPA is a combination of technological breakthroughs in voice recognition, natural language processing, machine learning, web semantics with Artificial Intelligence (AI) giving rise to a whole new innovative remake of the now obsolete PDA (Personal Digital Assistants).

The Most Popular IPAs in the Market

  • Siri

Siri is that application on Apple’s IOS-IPhone and IPad which gets activated on our natural language commands and performs a set task. It has this well crafted interface with which it can answer all user’s commands. It is only built for the Apple family and an IOS-IPhone or an IPad is a must to check out this IPA. All it has to hear to get started is “Let’s talk Siri”.

  • Google Now

Google Now is the application of Google’s Android that can be used on any of the Android built-in tablets and smart phones.  It definitely can do a lot more stuff than Siri. Comparatively, its performance is also much better compared to Siri’s in many aspects. Though it came into the market after Apple’s Siri, Google Now could establish itself providing better features and functionality than Siri.

  • Cortana

Cortana is Microsoft’s Intelligent Personal Assistant and is a part of Windows 10, set to launch sooner. Before its full level release, Cortana has already had some success in the previous versions of Windows. So, there’s nothing wrong for Windows to hold until everything is set and then products like these are always meaningful.
